It's relative. There's no absolute up, down, left or right. The universe doesn't come equipped with coordinates. The results of an experiment should be the same regardless if you rotate or translate the system. It's rotationally invariant. This symmetry allows us to add vectors with tip-to-tail. It's why we use the dot product instead of direct multiplication.
