I just got a $50k entry level job as a mechanical engineering in the Midwest and I consider myself lucky. I'm living with my mom and wife, and we'll have enough for a good house in just a few years. Housing here is $200-300k for a great house away from the city. My advice: don't live in a shithole like California.

having a bachelor's degree from a non-meme university in a non-meme field (anything with academic history) puts you in the 85-90th percentitle for education in the US. if you can't be successful with that, you will never be.

PhDs let you get into jobs that require you to have a PhD to apply. They also SOMETIMES let you get supervisory positions on entry if you're good at marketing the experience you got as part of it. It won't somehow let you get your foot in the door on entry-level positions.

You do a Ph.D because you want to be a doctor of philosophy. Anyone with a Ph.D in STEM is intellectually superior to everyone without one. You don't do a Ph.D for job opportunities you do it for social and intellectual superiority over other humans. Also, it doesn't hurt your job prospects either so there are no downsides.
