Do people actually believe in Flat Earth? How do people even get to that point in their life? What’s the best way to combat people like that? Should we really be responding to them? I use to think it was a joke but it’s getting a little out of control now.

Same. My younger cousin that used to watch the planets on my telescope with me and we've literally seen the starlink trains with is now a legitimate flat earther that doesn't listen to reason. I don't understand how people get roped into that bullshit.

Flat Earth is a deceptively simple statement that is surprisingly difficult to refute thoroughly. This makes it excellent bait for people who want to "flex their knowledge" but end up producing faulty arguments that a clever troll can pick apart.

As for why people believe it, that might just be due to the part of the scientific method that says that a thesis which survives many attempts at refutation is more likely to be true (there's a justification of this in game theory, by the way). When the flat-Earth troll appears (and may actually be) more intelligent than their opponents, it raises the credibility of their stance to onlookers.

There's a simple counter if the person is actually a flat earther and not a troll:
If the earth were flat, then the moon would not remain a consistent size as it moves through the night sky. One night, just go out and watch the moon and you'll see from it's rise through it's movement in the heavens it's the same sized ball. This can not happen on a flat earth model.
Obviously use the moon instead of the sun because you can directly look at it without damaging your eyes.

It doesn't though. The chance may be too small to perceive with your naked eye, but ball earth theory also predicts that the moon will be at different distances from you when the moon is at different positions in the sky, by as much as one radius of the earth.

There's a documentary called "Behind the Curve" that really made it easier for me to get. It's similar to a cult.

This is a group of people that are applying the scientific method innappropriately. They are not all idiots abut many are too firm in their beliefs, they bought a very expensive gyroscope to try and prove the earth was flat. It showed the earth was round almost immediately, but they kept trying. They have fallen into a trap of what >>12410111 said

The other aspect is heavily social. They feel like they can only make social connections with other flat earthers. They only date flat earthers. This creates a sense of community that is only strengthens by feeling persecuted for their beliefs. Then if someone realizes, oh this ain't real, they basically become persona non grata. It's like joining the JW or something.

Behind the curve is good, it's really good. Respectful but the editing is shady as hell which made me laugh like a mad man a couple times.

One of my friends who has been devoted to proving the Moon landing was a hoax is very desperate to find a way to believe Flat Earth Theory but can't quite make it over the hump of retardation that high. He has a circle of Moon landing hoax friends that reinforce his beliefs so he needs some Flat Earth Theory friends but hasn't been able to find any yet. Once he gets that social reinforcement, he'll dive in.

That's when they'll postulate that light bends in such a way the moon maintains an illusion of constant size. That's is what most flatties will argue for anyways; that the earth is flat but the universe is in on the globe earth conspiracy. The best response is to just ignore them and use our energy on more productive things.
