How close are we to FTL travel?

I would like to preface this by saying that, while I like to think I know a lot about space, I'm no scientist, and I don't know anything about protons or electrons or anything like that. I'm just some guy who really likes science fiction. So, please keep your answer as simplified as possible.

How close are we to Faster-Than-Light travel? I know Einstein pretty much proved that it was impossible, but I know about the Alcubierre drive and how someday we might me able to use it for in-system travel. However, I'd like to know just how far that "someday" is.

As a species we're pretty much just grazing the topic of space travel, so I figure it's pretty far off. I just wanted to hear the thoughts of some people that actually know about this kind of stuff.
