Been out of uni for 4 years or so now, working steadily as a big standard software developer, making decent money but pretty bored. Did a master's in CS with Artificial Intelligence and find machine learning really interesting. Is doing a Phd on the subject a realistic idea?

CS and AI in general are scam education programs. You can learn them on youtube. If you want to do a PhD, do it on something with ACTUAL science that takes more than simple youtubing to learn. Do engineering or something useful, and use AI as a TOOL in your work, because that's all it is anyways.

You've already done a masters with an AI component, so you should know whether doing a PhD on the subject is realistic.
That said, artificial intelligence is essentially what a lot of silicon valley companies are trying to achieve, by improving their backend for categorising users of social media so they can display the correct advertisements to them.

Honestly AI is a fucking joke to specialize in. I use it everyday in engineering and I'm not even a CS major lol. Fucking anyone can do AI.
