Powerful brains like ours require lots of energy to maintain, so they would probably lose their athletic abilities as they became closer to us intellectually. our capabilities are due to our ability to organize in large communities, and while aggression helps to establish hierarchy in early civilization, too much makes any complex organization impossible. if they kept their personality, chimps would never rise above tribal society. Torture and murder is more natural to chimps than that of any other ape, and id argue more so than humans. sure there are men capable of doing such things, but I dont believe its natural to humans, in ancient times or now. For chimps or their tiny cousin bonobos, brutality is too easy and they desire violent revenge for even the slightest infraction. with human level intellegence they would be like klingons without the technology.
