you should almost always go somewhere else for grad school, at least for a phd. not sure if it's the same for MS
however, in general people move up in status going from undergrad to grad school, because there are fewer people going to grad school and if you didn't fuck around all undergrad you can generally distinguish yourself more

If your final objective is an MS degree, then the advisor does not matter, as long as he does not slow you down for an MS. What matters is the city/region you are in, the job market/career fair and how close the school is to your desired career/family etc.
Basically career stuff post MS, you are just using the MS to maximize your career/earning potential. So if you are in ohio state for engineering but want to work in oil and gas, then going to UT austin or Texas A&M makes sense etc.

If your final objective is a PhD, and you really want to get into an elite top 10 school, and you don't think you have the credentials to get in directly from BS. Then having a strong connected advisor at a smaller school might help you, as long as you make it clear to him from the start and maximize your networking/conference/pubs/reachout/fellowship applications during your time. However this will take you at least 1 more year than direct to PhD (unless you are brilliant/lucky). Also finding an MS advisor (who also has PhD level stydents and a group) that will support you using him as a jumping point might be hard at mid-level big schools.

If that is the case then it should be relatively easy to find a school. Just email advisors and see who has spots.
GPA and pubs are fine, might not make you very competitive for Toronto, but you might have a chance in McMaster or Queens

I applied to University of Hawaii and a Max Planck Institute for PhD. Was offered both and took Max Planck as the money and working conditions are way better for MPI although I'm a bit sad as I would have loved to work with one old fulla at UHM. My country is essentially corona free so somewhat apprehensive about going to Germany but I'm young and don't smoke anymore so should be sweet?

How to apply directly to European universities if I am a third world shitter? All the research that they do here are trivial applications or outdated scraps that they picked up from 'Murrican and EUfag unis. I don't think I have a chance in applying in the US unis, so I'll first look into EU.
I plan to either pursue CS or Math, if that helps. Though I'm a bit interested in finding applicstions of Mathematical Analysis in CS and some formal verification programs.

you're actually exactly right. it's not easy looking for jobs for the average graduate - and actually, to be an average graduate is already pretty tough at UofT (dropout rate in CS was like 50%, EE is also a real tough program). You basically end up working for some shitty startup and paid some measly amount. But the plus side is that there are a lot of startups springing up, so you probably can find something to settle for.

You're right that the key is "decently paying job" part is hard to get. Even google waterloo won't get you a starting 6 figure salary - in CAD! I had a friend who was really capable, got multiple envious six figure offers in the states, but wanted to stay in waterloo for his girlfriend, and he had to negotiate super hard for 90k CAD at Google. Whereas in the states, in the bay area or NYC you'll get starting 6 figures USD at Google no question.

The real money is in the states. If you can land a job there, you should take it - even if it's not at a Big N. You can transfer/move around the area once you're there.

physics phd here, $36k in the states (southern cal)
all of my offers were around this, some included insurance while others didn't. I pay for subsidized school insurance, it's pretty painless.

Depending on the program you are going into you will need undergraduate research (usually done in your junior or senior year). Also look at labs you want to join specifically not just schools, because good PIs make or break PhDs.

What do you want to do? Industry: no one cares where you went. Academics: No one cares, if you can get federal/outside funding, otherwise top-schools get you a job out of school, and nothing after. Going to a top school doesn't stop the truly mediocre from middling forever, going to a mediocre school doesn't stop the elite from being recognized as such.

Not that guy you're replying to. But what chance can I get in touch with a well known researcher in a lab? I've looked up TU/e in Netherlands, and they seem to have an interesting crypto lab there headed by Daniel J. Bernstein. I haven't done any undergrad research, but I'm self-studying Analysis and Algebra, and some TCS. Since my CS curriculum in this third world shithole is completely dumbed down.

See if there is research you are interested in, and if the PIs involved in this research are active and publishing. Then you can reach out to them and see if you xan shadow in that lab or if they are looking for students.

Someone has to pay for you to do research, unless you are paying out of pocket (very dumb, sad!) or if you are an international borat who is bankrolled by his government

Research Scientist in medical (disinfection) company
There's essentially two options for me to advance from where I am now. Go into management roles and/or increase my qualifications, so I can get higher level positions. I'd rather not go into pure management so PhD would be very favourable (a lot of CTOs/CSOs also have PhDs).
I also want to research deageing because I think it's a field that's starting to take off and it would be good to get in now. Also a lot of transferable skills vis-a-vis bionformatics/data science.

Admittedly I could see it working out well if you had a scholarship at a decent uni which included healthcare in a low COL US city.

You don't ever have to pay for a PhD/Masters in the US? Even as a foreign student? I know you "shouldn't" but I swear I remember seeing people talking about how you need to look around and make sure you're not going into one you have to pay for so I thought they existed in the US.

not for a phd in STEM at any uni you'd want to get one in. paid phds are in a severe minority, I never encountered one in physics
masters you have to pay for, which is why I say never get a masters in the US as its a scam

every school I applied to also funded foreign students. this might not always be the case since I only applied to top-15 programs, which all will fund their students. I am not sure about the lesser ones

Yeah fair enough. I'm not sure what my odds would be of getting accepted into US postgrad when I only have an Australian 3 years BS. Might try overseas after/if I complete a masters here. Would be neat to be at one of the bigger SENS labs or Sinclair's Harvard lab.

masters you can also get funding for but it's becoming less common because it makes a lot of money charging them tuition. lots of masters fields are becoming watered down diploma mills

yeah literally 15 people from my graduating class went to harvard to get a masters (in shit like "education" and "social policy"), probably paying like 100k to do so. I'm pretty sure it means nothing to those in the field because of this phenomenon

I'm looking for some academic advice and trust this thread more than /adv/ because it's about graduate level mathematics.

I did an undergraduate degree in economics (kill me) with a minor in mathematics. My minor included:
>Calc 1, 2, 3 and advanced calc.
>Linear Algebra 1 and 2
>Ordinary Differential Equations
>Probability and Statistics (two separate upper-level courses)
>Logic (Set theory/Cardinality, Lindenbaum-Tarsky algebra, Boolean algebra, Languages, Turing Machines, Godel's incompleteness theorem)
>Theory of financial interest (joke course)

Right now I'm working as an actuary (kill me again) and doing a Master's Degree in statistics part-time. I would prefer to do a masters in applied math, statistics just seems kind of boring to me and it's not as interesting as math is in general to me. The problem is, in my undergrad I never took real abstract algebra or analysis, not even the beginner courses. Is there any hope to transfer from my Statistics master into an applied math master at a somewhat good university without having those pre-requisite courses? If I somehow managed to pay for Analysis and Algebra courses at some local University, would most admissions departments consider me for an applied math program?

Basically, is there any plausible way I can close the gap in my knowledge and switch courses without redoing undergrad? would appreciate any insight or advice, I don't know a lot about academia.

Find the program you are interested in.
Lookup the prerequisite courses.
Do them at your current school if possible.
Apply for the second MS.
Transferring from one MS to another is a waste of time depending on how deep you are in your current degree. Might as well get 2 MS degrees.
