What we need is a mesh made out of some sort of material that would vibrate with great intensity when in contact with heat. The vibrations would generate electricity in the same way that, I assume, rotating turbine does. It would avoid the steam-turbine primitivism, a genius idea really.

Needlessly comicated. We just need better thermoelectric materials. Specifically, something with a very high electrical conductivity and a very low thermal conductivity.
The best thermoelectric materials max out at about 20% efficiency right now. Imagine if we had a material that could take 70 or 80% of ambient waste heat and convert it directly into electricity.
