If there is no predators around, then the brighter males will survive and the females will chose them to mate with. A few generations out, you'll get coloration. With predators, no. Predators will eat the bright spot ones, females won't select them sometimes either. But can a plain breed with a plain and get a fancy? No. Females do store sperm though and it even though it may appear like they bred with a plain then they produce a fancy from a previous mate.
