which is more important to you, have a larger work surface, or being able to look back on all of your work later without having to create a separate extract?

Yes. Having the ability to sketch out ideas in big letters and figures gives you another angle from which to look at your problems. It does not replace a notepad, but is a terrific companion.

I usually sketch the first versions of an idea/solution on a whiteboard and after that I rewrite it on a more permanent medium, which also gives me an opportunity to go over the whole idea and reword where appropriate.
