How can I test a substance to see whether it contains a certain chemical or not?

I know the chemical formula and molar mass I'm testing for.

Asking because my specialty is maths, but I'm entering a clinical trial and need to see if I'm receiving the placebo or not.

If you're participating in a clinical trial to test new medication for a particular disorder, the contrast will be with the currently most effective treatment, i.e. an active placebo. So one way or the other, you're getting treatment. All your unblinding will do is screw up the contrast of interest and thus research on the treatment of your disorder. If you're intent on doing this, at least drop out of the study or make clear to the experimenters that you were unblinded when the study is over. I personally run clinical trials and subject behavior like this really has the potential to screw up years of work.

So you're telling you're participating in a clinical trial for a treatment of a debilitating disorder that does not have any effective treatment at the moment, not even conventional pain killer medication. What phase trial is it? Sample size indicates phase 2. Which means there should be an active placebo. This isn't making any sense.

yes I am. Conventional treatment has failed. There is a new medicine that isn't yet available (only in trials). There are 4 trials I can enter. But I really must get this medicine since my health is in a bad state. So I'm asking for advice how to know if I'm receiving placebo or not so I can quit the trial and try another one.

if you call tell us what kind of chemical it is, there are bunch of relatively simple semi-historical tests
if it's an alkaloid for example, you can use Wagner's test
placebo would just be dextrose tablet without anything and give negative result
any alkaloid would give positive, but it's unlikely placebo would also have an alkaloid (again, just an example)

you can also go to analytical chemistry department and give some guy with HPLC-MS something to do

Thanks, I'm already asking around a bunch and gotten useful answers from people.

The molecule itself is quite simple, consisting only of the elements: C, H, N, O, S
(50 atoms in total)
My first test will be for dextrose since I know non-placebo dosage. I heard as well it can be done by a lab using NMR, HPLC, IR spec, Stoichiomtry

not really helping there, but at least we can rule out looking for metals (you could detect for example pepto-bismol or lithium orotate this way extremely easily)
HPLC-MS would be easiest way to figure out what it is if you don't the structure exactly
NMR, IR, Ramen, etc. would help if mass spectrometer fingerprint isn't enough
but if you know what you are looking for, there are simpler ways than using machines worth tens of thousands of dollars and up each

yes you would surely see characteristic fragments but I doubt that OP had a HPLC-MS in his garage.
I would go for IR or trying to create a colored molecule out of some amine or amide group

What will knowing do? What can you possibly change knowing you have the drug or not if there are no other alternatives. If you tell us the disease maybe it would make sense, but right now it just sounds like you should have been filtered from the study.
