I know Usenet and IRC were popular in academia a long time ago. And there must still be a few hobby scientist forums alive somewhere. Any of those worth checking out? Where do you hang out besides /sci/?

IRC is still, "a thing" kind of. Discord is entirely composed of normies. Most SMF, etc. are dead. Mojave is a thing for tech stuff (see lucky225).

Very hard to find good places. I've had moderate success with Ruqqus but its too small still to be worthwhile.

Element has some tech communities. Discord is shit, I guess academic circles are still the best option.
