The truth is that it's a hideously complex machine that has billions of hidden mechanisms that can create much worse outcomes even from the smallest alterations. I can appreciate someone trying to, say, super charge a nation but even that is riddled with massive dangers unless clear future knowledge is distributed well. You can give them machines to be better and work better, but they may turn the automation in to automated slave whipping machines and move global warming up 100 years so humanity is even less prepared to handle it.
Frankly I'd say fuck it and go back pretty dang far with a backpack full of important knowledge, solar chargers, kindles, measurement devices, and practical demonstration stuff to jump start an ancient civilization with culture and science. Keeping them safe by telling them about gunpowder or steel if needed.
