The nuclear explosion thing has... as far as I know, always been major-grade bullshit. A lot of nuclear reactors nowadays are designed so they DON'T do that. People just remember Chernobyl and Three Mile Island and assume all reactors are like that.
At the same time I have no idea how nuclear reactors work.

current reactors cannot blow up in a nuclear detonation because the fuel is way to dilute. The anti-breeder argument is that they can blow up because they continuously produce new fuel inside the core

Really this boils down to "can a nuclear reactor form a supercritical assembly with a multiplication factor roughly above 1.3" and the answer is a solid "no" even if you make a device like the SHIVA core it will bounce itself appart or the fission waste will render it subcritical faster than you can push the spheres together with normal equipment.

Ocams razor here, if you could make a nuke pushing two pieces of Uranium together by hand why did the Manhattan project spend like 30% of their time on fancy explosive lenses or high speed guns to form a supercritical mass fast enough for an explosion?
