Because being in a group give humans an advantage. If a humans loses a member of the group (because he is separated) they will try to find it. They feel the pain of losing a member so they search for him and try to reunite. If the person is still alive this pain is useful because it keeps people in the group. If the person is dead then the pain is useless. But still the mechanism is not perfect and can't discriminate a lost person from a dead one.

Its an overreaction like some people die form an bee sting. But it isnt severe enough to actually reduce the effect.
You feel bad cause your organism knows if it sustains its "friends" its chance of survival increase.
Yeah simply an overreaction like pain, but the learn effect is better with overreactions.

Feeling grief and depression is normal. Usually what's lacking today are appropriate coping mechanisms or solution based decision making when faced with grief.
