>>12392812Being gay has long been a "don't ask, don't tell" kind of thing in western civilization. I grew up in the Bible Belt of the US during the conservative 80s and even then it was ok for someone to be gay if they weren't flaunting it. Most families had that one uncle or cousin who was a lifelong confirmed bachelor who "preferred the company of men", which everyone knew meant he was gay. No one really discussed it, much like most the time no one mentions gravity in daily conversation (outside of an academic or research context).
Our town had two gay bars but they were downtown with their doors facing an alleyway that wasn't visible from the street. Everyone knew the bars were there and what they were for. They kept their activities to themselves so they were left alone. But yes, if they started trying to recruit children or teens, thing would get ugly.
