It depends on the exact definition on what constitutes life.

Based on the fact that in the Delta quadrant there are Macroviruses I feel they are alive.

They are usually said to be not alive because they have no metabolism and can't reproduce by themselves. Most biologists agree that they are probably a hyper specialized bacteria but viruses don't fossilize so it is basically impossible to test.

It is actually a meaningful discussion, viruses are very different to any other life seen on earth since they dont montabolise anything or perform homeostasis or pretty much anything. They're very different to bacteria
