What's the endgame of linear algebra?

How did you succeed linear algebra? I'm in my third year of engineering and I feel like a retard reading the question in the picture. I am unable to solve linear algebra problems like this one. However, I fully understand the the algorithms they lead to like QR/SVD decomposition. Is something wrong with me or it's just inherently difficult?

Linear algebra is generally a more easy math field in the sense that for lots of it you got geometric intuition. E.g. rotating and scaling is hands-on and visual.

All you really have to do is plug and chug, but with variables.

All I needed to do was take the dot product of two different rows of that matrix to realize that I would get a dot product of 0 when v is unit length.
I tried it again, but with the same row, and I saw that I would get 1 whenever v is unit length. So, H is orthogonal when v is unit length.

When v is not unit length, but isn’t 0, then there is at lease one non-zero component, which causes at least one of the row magnitudes of H to be non-1, so H can’t be an orthogonal matrix.

If v is 0, then the matrix is identity, so it is orthogonal.

So H is orthogonal iff v is unit length, or 0.
