People dont die of covid, they die of associated organ failure. Most people dying "of covid" will not actually have active virus in their bodies. They are dying of the effects of tissue damage from both the acute infection stage as well as from damage wrought by their immune system.
Tissue scarring and fluid in the lung tissues for example which lead to lung failure are a direct consequence of the immune system response.
Think of it like this: Saddam Hussein is the virus, the US military the immune system and Iraq is the lungs.
