I have been doing some thinking and started wondering if we can use infrared or UV light to transmit communications signals. Would this even be possible?

also, once you get to optical frequencies, you can't really use phase information anymore to encode data, only amplitude. line of sight becomes increasingly important too because RF diffracts more

It would be. But it would be useless in the end. Infrared and visible are both limited by regular physical objects due to them being opaque to those wavelengths.
Consider this, you are sitting inside your house, and you turn on a flashlight, does the light go through your wall?
Visible and infrared are great for modulation techniques which require a short period, but the limitations means that you cannot use them terrestrially.

Uh no guy, YOU consider THIS. Most of this retard clown world is switching to LED lights, which can square wave modulate and use chroma shift keying and all the required attributes to transmit data. Therefore, lighting itself cna be used as a mesh net transceiver system. Physical objects are somewhat of a hindrance, but real world tests with Li-Fi find actually pretty decent reflection off surfaces for non-line of sight scenarios.

sure. I have seen a setup with a simple red laser transmitting a mp3 signal on a trade fair like 15 years ago.
you could interrupt the signal with your hand. in principle, fiber optic technology is nothing else.
