Philosophy should always be the cornerstone of science. Many "scientists" of today memorize and regurgitate data without asking the right questions in order to research said data.
Research methods will always have a philosophical underpinning. Unfortunately this has been abandoned for the sake of dogma. Spirituality philosophy is also the cornerstone of religion. When religion abandons philosophical exploration it can also become dogmatic.
As a result, a lot of science has become no different from some of the religions they criticize. The psychological overtones they were exploited in the past are still exploited today.
