>>12366488Actually just thought of a much better virus.
One that doesn't cause sterility in one generation, but instead destabilizes genomes greatly over a few generations. Transposon elements or something similar.
The idea here, now, is that an asymptomatic virus infects gametes (this could actually work as an STD as long as its asymptomatic enough) that causes exponential DNA instability over time by introducing instability-producing elements permanently into the genome (thinking transposons again, but something a little more sophisticated). So, the virus would spread, but would not be detectable as there is no symptom except higher rates of genetic defects at birth. the first generation gets infected, say it spreads to 50% of the globe; the next offspring of those 50% have a higher rate of genetic defects, noticeably so maybe, but not easy to trace the source (its not always easy to know a virus causes something. We just recently discovered HPV, for example, and its been around forever).
The next generation after that will see the real brunt force: by the 3rd generation, its near-impossible to get rid of genetic defects unless you can permanently alter everyone's genetics from the getgo.
This will destabilize the shit outta the world. I think we're at the point where in 3 generations we could potentially stop it before it causes mass chaos, but the next 2 generations would be "worse" than this generation due to the virus, so who knows.
