Phys/CS grad here, it won't do shit for you if you choose to go into software engineering (other than the fact that you have to be good at problem-solving to do well in physics and CS). If you want to make six figures as a software engineer, learn best practices and make some projects with good code hygiene/version control hygiene.

Yes, a lot of computer science is either pure or applied math of some form.

I mean, it's a book about algebraic geometry in computer science, not a survey of cojmputer science at large.

The point here is that CS and programming are entirely two different things. Being a computer scientist has nothing to do with being "just a high level programmer."
