I'm looking for engineering PhD positions right now and feel so worthless. I see students on the university websites getting scholarships and doing great research. Why should anyone pay me to do a PhD? I don't know anything and can't do anything.

A PhD is a diploma. Don't work with people who believe you should know everything about the subject field before joining it. You should definitely do some research before the interview and read like one review paper on the matter but the interview should be about you asking questions about the subject.

I actually had an interview with a pi who expected extensive experience in the field of his subject. I had done a 2 year stint as a research assistant in that field before applying, with heavy experimental skills and stuff. He was probing me about antenna measurement specifics and metasurface design up to a point where i just asked him whether i was applying for a post doc or a PhD. A master student shouldnt have to know how to focus energy in grating modes. Good at EM courses, you betcha. Having the knowledge of a PhD holder before the PhD itself is not necessary.

Textbooks tell you everything about making wheels, but you can read all you want, it takes trying to actually make sure you get through the specifics. PhDs are about teaching you how to do the second kind.

Keyword here being "teaching", because a PhD is supposed to be formative and a lot of people tend to forget that. You don't need to be able to make a lightbulb or a steam engine. You just need to want that. PhD's are here to teach you how to do so.

Recently a (western) PhD working in a Hong Kong University (can't recall which one) told us basically this:

It's really not that hard to get into a PhD. As long as you have a master's, have an idea for your PhD, and are willing to grind for the funding.

How could you get that funding depends a lot on your nationality, you could get funding from your own goverment, there are also scolarships in your destination country directed towards foreign students, specially if they are willing to be TAs alongside their PhD duties.

If that's not your case, you can get funding through the project. You would have to convince your prospective PI that you are good enough to receive a monthly allowance above other candidates.

But the thing is, not many people go into PhDs. And you joining the program helps your PI and Uni.

Shithole country in the middle east. I have a choice between military service and a PhD in a foreign country. PhDs in my country aren't funded, at all.
What I really want is to get out of this country, get a stable job, find a wife and settle down. But asshole government won't let me leave the country before completion of military service. And even if they did, which company would give a foreigner with zero work experience a related engineering job? So a PhD program is basically my ticket out.

For France I know the Eiffel scolarship, that's my objective in about a year.

I know that in Germany tuition is free, but you'll have to look for funding.

Take in mind that being from a shithole country actually opens up foreign funding.

I think the shithole country funding is mostly for African countries. Like, the university of British Columbia has an application fee waiver for the 50 least developed countries. But their fucking $170 fee is a month and half's salary here. 170 fucking dollars just to apply. It's ridiculous.

I know your situation is probably shit, but just take in mind some of the options I told you, and google away, really, just look on how to apply for funding in the countries that interest you, and don't be afraid to apply and be rejected until you can escape your middle eastern faith.

Hell, I live a way better life than most people here in Mexico off of my master's stipend, which is goverment funded and even available for foreigners too.

Around 2 and a half years for me. If by MOS you mean "United States military occupation code", then we don't really have that kind of thing here. Your degree affects your starting rank, which affects your salary (even the highest salaries are effectively nothing), but you don't take on an engineering role as a conscript. It's mostly just standing guard or washing toilets. Now you see why I want out?

Yes, but that's not why they take so long. Masters+PhD used to only take 4 years (and many programs are still called 4 year programs), but PhDs take so long now because there's a lot of labor obligations and other research that you're doing that's unrelated to your dissertation. Do PhDs typically take longer than advertised in your country?

The reason why I ask is because if you do have to TA and the pay is barely above minimum wage, if Academia jobs are scarce, or PhDs don't have much luck in the private sector, you're better off not doing it. You don't need to engage in a 4 or 5 year waste of your time to get out of a 2.5 year waste of your time.

That is absolute fucking nonsense. 10 fucking years to reach the edge and start doing research ? A PhD is hardly more than 5 years, and by the third you've pretty much surveyed litterally everything there is to know in your field. Quit making people believe science is this arcane fucking thing. Textbook knowledge is actually a great basis in many fields when it comes to designing systems, and anyone that spent more than one week in an academic or private sector knows how handy they come at one point or another.

You can be a TA if you like and your professor wants you, but the pay is laughably negligible. I don't think PhD students have labor obligations here.

No idea.

PhDs in general aren't funded here, which is why most PhD students either rely on their family to support them or work elsewhere alongside a full-time program.
The thing is, I'm thinking even if a PhD is a waste of time as far as job prospects go, at least I'll learn some new skills. I learnt a shitton during my master's degree. So given that 2 and a half years of military service is like, more than half a PhD, if I manage to get into a western university then in the worst case I'll just leave my PhD degree out of my resume and will have a chance at a job in Europe.
