How can coffee ever make you good at math? It just makes it harder for your brain to feel tired. You can drink coffee or not, it doesn't matter. I suspect that the mathematicians you know drink coffee to make themselves feel more energetic.

Coffee, as far as I remember, has long term benefits for you when you drink it in moderation. What's not good is that you build tolerance to caffeine to the point where feeling normal and alert could be tied to coffee, but even this is corrected by not drinking coffee for a couple of weeks during breaks

Thanks! My professor noted I was looking a bit tired and recommended I drink coffee (he drinks coffee every morning) as he said it makes him more productive but I wanted to make sure I wouldn't be permanently damaging my mind/body.

Smoking actually makes you better at maths. There was a study but it was suppressed because people thought that dumb people will think correlation implies causation and that mathematicians will start smoking (which they should if they want to become better at maths).
