I have been thinking about evolution a lot lately. It seems like when some adaptation is very successful it evolves independently over and over again. Such as the eye or flight (insects, mammals, birds).

What could the reason be that our level of tool use and intelligence has never before evolved? There were hundreds of millions of years chances. There were bipedal vertebrate animals with hands, we have their footprints, if they had made glass bottles and computer chips by the million we would have examples of them.

Why only in humans? Why so quickly after so many eons of no adaptation that is remotely close?

I am not making some kind of "explain that or god did it" argument I am atheist

but why?
