Exercices were way too harder than those of last year. Even after intensive training during a week before the exam, I still got fucked in the ass and might end with a 7 or 8/20

How do you cope, /sci/ ?

i was a math major at a top school (although im only slightly above average ability) and it was clear from day 1, some of my classmates were going to become tenured professors or some quant genius.
It was a nightmare trying to keep up with those guys. I remember trying to get my hands on their work just to see how they approached problems. One guy was correcting our professor's (well known in the field) work. There were also a bunch of Putnam fellows/IMO medallists who didn't even practice going into the competition. This was when we were only 19 years old.
I learned to cope not comparing. I just made sure i understand my tasks and I did them.

1 week is not enough to study for a uni exam dude. You need to study constantly throughout the semester and keep up with the material. You might pass but then its more luck than ability.

How is this even possible without prior exposure to math?

It's not. People who go to the IMO and are competitive practise a lot for it. It's 95% about practise and doing exercises. Although at some point you will have covered almost all stuff especially when you are younger so it might just be muscle memory to them.

yeah. But its nothing special. Bear in mind this was just undergrad. The kid got 100% in all the homeworks and tests, that's all. The top of our class is getting tenure at Harvard in 2021 though.

The other anon is probably right, idk. But the guy i was refering to, i remember specifically asking him how he was preparing for both IMO and Putnam at the same time and he just shrugged. I knew at the time he was working in industry for someone in mathematical research. Honestly it's just intuition and talent.
