I've known multiple people who died of complications, and tested negative for the flu (though I don't know how extensive flu testing was pre-2000), so I would assume something bad was going around.

Have you never heard of it? Well, I hadn't either until a few weeks ago. And I don't think most people at the time knew about the flu pandemic either.

That was the state of things before the internet. Diseases came and went without anybody noticing.

The media tried to get us hyped up about the swine flu in 2009, but since the internet wasn't as big back then the media wasn't as successful.

Eh, I've seen no evidence that there was mass media coverage of the flu in 1957-1958. Which was actually worse than Covid-19 on a per capita basis.

What you see on TV and in newspapers is largely influenced by the internet. Basically, people on Facebook share horror stories on the internet about whole families dying from COVID-19, so that's what they request CNN cover.

H2N2 deaths (est) - 116k
0.67 deaths per 1k

USA 2020
Population - 328.2 million
COVID-19 deaths - 253k
0.77 deaths per 1k

Plus the deaths are going to exceed 300k by the end of the year, so that number is still climbing.

It would have to get to about 2.75 million deaths in order to equal the 1957-1958 flu levels.

Anyway, there wasn't half as much hoopla over the 1918 flu as there was about the current coronavirus. My longest living great-grandfather was born in 1901, and he never once told me anything about the Spanish flu. He died in 1998, when I was 13.

mainly local news, no worldwide information sources.

Corona on the other hand has somewhere between a 0.5% and 1.5% death rate; between 25x and 75x more deadly than swine flu. And that's not including the old sick invalids who have around a 10% or higher death rate with covid. Obama lucked the fuck out in that regard, given that the piggy coof infected 60 million americans on his watch. He would have potentially lost over a million people in the first year alone if it were as deadly as Covid.

Hell swine flu was so weak that it's still around and we don't commonly vaccinate against it. It's still just sort of there and everyone forgot about it.
