You’re probably just misunderstanding Dennett. Consciousness and free will are both illusion; such convincing illusions in fact they seem completely really to you and me. But that’s because I am trapped in my own mind. If you were capable of seeing and comprehending the inner workings of your mind in real time I believe this illusion of consciousness would instantly disappear. Because consciousness requires a certain level of ignorance to “where” the thoughts are coming from. If you could see what chain of neural connectors and external stimuli led to each of your individual thoughts you’d immediately realize you have no control over your thoughts and would then lose consciousness. At least that’s how I see it. Call me a zombie if you’d like
