American undergraduate curriculum varies greatly depending on the school.
A large chunk of Americans go to community colleges, which aren't even remotely on par with private research schools (ex. Harvard, MIT, Princeton, etc.) and flagship state schools (UCLA, UPen, etc.). So, there's always a good chance that an American on this board will be educated from a shit community college or low-level state school, which explains why their curriculum doesn't seem comparable in the slightest to maybe a German University.
It doesn't help that most people don't know the differences between stuff like this, and they just end up lumping all American university curriculums as garbage.
Also, 'upper-level' maths are often found at shit schools too, which is why its easier to run into people like that. Biochem, molec. bio/genetics, and chemistry normally isn't, so there's a filter.
Could be wrong about a lot though, this is just from my perspective as someone who's been in both the American and German university systems.

In the US calculus is broken up into differential, integral, and multivariable, all as their own classes.
They are usually only a quarter long which is about three months, a bit less.
Some will take advanced calculus if they need to, usually only applied math majors.

in germany, the title engineeris protected by the legal regulations of the federal states.
no technical studies, no engineering degree.

there is even a legal permission written on my certificate, that from now on Im allowed

You very probably won't get that job if you don't have a degree in medicine and haven't done residency.

But also just going to school and study anatomy and such prerequisites to get the job doesn't mean you graduate and are a heart surgeon.
You only get the title doctor which means teacher, because you know a lot. But you do not get the title cardiac surgeon unless you have that job.
and if you get that job but jerk off into a patients gaping cavity you'll be fired and then you'll be a "former" heart surgeon.

It's not just a South American thing, it's a language thing. "The Americas" is a neologism invented by English-speakers. They literally changed the name of the continent.

In Spanish (as in Spain), in French and Italian IIRC, among other languages, the name of the continent is America, named after Amerigo Vespucci who figured out it was a new continent.

Regardless, I'm South American myself (not the previous anon) and I've always thought this debate is retarded. Different languages use different continental models, it's not that difficult to understand and deal with this.

If the average person coming out of a university is dumb, then that university will develop a bad reputation, and since people will be less interested in going to that university as a result, the university will be forced to lower their tuition prices. It's supply and demand, anon.

needless to say I did Calc I-III at a community college which guaranteed transfer to my state school. I only applied to my state school for this reason.
I'm my state you're allowed to do full time community college instead of HS.
But yeah it takes the Average American 18 years to learn fucking elementary algebra.
a lot of them cope by pretending "precalculus" isn't algebra, it's "precalc." KEK.
Honestly I'm ashamed of how retarded our public education is.
In my state a CC degree is equivalent to a HS diploma. So when I have sons I'll sue a public CC for age discrimination to let my kid into a CC early. Hopefully just a threatening letter is enough for them though.
