The only time crossbreeding can work is if 1. If both species are related and if 2. The species have a chromosome count that isn't too far off.
For an example, A male donkey (62 chromosomes) and a female horse (64 chromosomes) can mate and produce a mule because their species are related to one another and their chromosome count are close enough to each other. Of course, this means the mule cannot reproduce, same with the majority of other hybrids.
