Dark academia may happen after post doc or in industry. It’s usually surrounded by paperwork requiring an NDA or government clearances. This kind of work is “Dark” because you might be optimizing flight trajectories for missiles that have been used to murder innocent civilians from the US Military or create a new genetic attribute to a crop for Monsanto.
Think of the “Manhattan Project” that was a secret government operation to create an atomic bomb. It could be the research from the CRIPSR scientist from China, He Jiankui. I’m personally developing on some algorithms that might be considered “Dark Academia”
It’s a good concept that encapsulates interesting academic work.
