Is it true that some people can't close their eyes and visualize an object on command? Is that a skill related to intelligence?

I got hit on the head and completely lost this ability for a long time. I have also done a ton of vicodin and gained much better control of this ability for a very long time afterward even when the vicodin wore off.

What does said dialogue look like? Cause I talk and argue with myself all the time, primarily in an attempt to hone my linguistic skills (hence why I rarely fight said battles in my native tongue).

I don't even need to close my eyes. If I think hard enough about something, even with my eyes wide open, my thoughts replace my vision until my focus is broken. Almost got hit by a car while doing this once.

I can only do it unconsciously. E.g. I'm walking or sitting and doing nothing else so my mind switches to something else. The moment I try to do it consciously, my mind focuses only partly on the actual thing and partly on the attempt to visualise, so it's always very blurry, undefined etc.

I certainly can’t visualize anything for the most part. There are occasions where I find I have very vivid mental imagery, but I haven’t been able to determine why. It isn’t something I can control. Typically I have no visual imagination, it is nothing but an endless stream of internal monologue.

Of course various drugs have given me the ability to visualize entire worlds and sceneries. In no particular order, the drugs with have worked: LSD, mushooms(psilocybin), DMT, ketamine, various opioids.

And I do visualize objects while sleeping, via dreams. But in my normal waking life I have no capacity to do so.

What do you mean by visualize? If I close my mind and think of a chair, yeah, I can know what one would look like. A certain design comes to mind, but I don't "see" a picture of it or anything. I can imagine a glove spinning, but I don't "see" that either, I just know what one looks like. Is that what you're talking about?

It's more of a spectrum of ability. On one end is someone who can't visualize anything. The average person probably can visualize a decent amount of things (I think humans are very visual creatures). Then at the more skilled end are people who can visualize things that most cant. This includes chess grandmasters who can visualize chess boards and pieces on them. Some of them can be even play 20 games blindfold at the same time. Most people probably would have a hard time even visualizing a board with 64 squares and all the pieces around.

Like, if i say a cube 10cm in diameter, bisected in two, with a half sphere on one side, etc etc etc. using those kinds of operation i can keep complex shapes in my head but its closer to being able to write the coordinates of each points than to even imaignint it graphically

like, not just doodling, but if you go to art school youll get it.
Like, draw something from a model , look at what you have drawn and quickly look at what you were drawing. Ask yourself why its different. Correct it. Rinse and repeat for years and slowly your brain will adapt to keeping "snapshots" in your brain for longer times

I am split on this
On one side I have met people who claimed they have weak imagination. On the other hand I think aphantasia is a gigantic misconception of what imagination is. Some normalfag once thought if he doesn't see a detailed jpg like its right in front of him on a screen means he has some sort of mental defect he can blogpost about.
Same applying to inner speech. They dont hear an audible tyler durden in their head like he is next to them so they "have no inner speech like uhm idk hihi".
Shortly said: I think these conceptions are caused by people being not capable to grasp the abstraction of their own mind because they think of imagination and the like as too literal and based on what they see in movies about it.
