>>12332660>Is math sexist?No.
>Then why are there so few female top stack exchange users? The short answer is time and the effects of seniority on teaching. Every year, the number of women pursuing doctoral degrees in STEM increases, but it's still not ~50/50 and likely won't be for some decades. Go back a couple decades and the numbers were significantly worse.
The individuals most likely to actively pursue teaching (over the internet in this case) are also more likely to have seniority, that is, got their Ph.D.s awhile ago rather than recently, back when fewer Ph.D.s were awarded to females.
In other words, the gender ratio in today's teaching environment more accurately reflect the gender ratios of advanced degrees being awarded many many years ago rather than those of today.
Moral of the story:
Gender discrepancy does not imply the existence some sexist filter, except in the special case that said filter is biological.
Example:
>Why are there so few female sperm donors? Is donating sperm sexist? No. There are few female sperm donors because the ability to produce sperm is *strongly* correlated with being biologically male.
