How the fuck do I learn this stuff? I can understand it and walk myself through certain problems, but on the exams I've gotten absolutely destroyed. No other engineering course has given me more difficulty than this class has.

Just do some practice problems, Fourier transforms are very basic tools to solve PDEs. Look in any PDE book.

I'm pretty comfortable with differential equations and PDEs. It's more when dealing with signals and systems that it becomes more blurred for me. I can understand it to a reasonable level to pass the class, but I'm definitely not doing as well as I'd like or expect from myself.

think of how you use inner products to expand vectors in bases. it's the same here. identify that the integral $\int f(x)^* g(x) dx$ is an inner product and consider different bases. an important one is the fourier transform "basis" $e^{j \omega t}$ or some variant thereof. it satisfies orthogonality realtions w.r.t the above inner product (just remember the conjugate), and can be made to be orthonormal (inner product = 1 for each basis vector applied to itself).

now just remember the inner product and be aware of whatever convention you are using for the basis vectors.

this way you can keep the + and - straight, because there are a lot of conventions. moreover, it simplifies the notation and makes scary integrals look less scary. the pattern is the same across all fourier analysis, with some mathematical nuances to account for infinities here and there and which can be ignored most of the time.

When you see one of those integrals (funky sums), try and figure out a down-to-earth explanation for each term. Engineering has a bad habit of being full of grotesque equations and identities. Figuring out what they mean and how to cheat on exams is the way to survive it, though.

I can recommend numerical fourier analysis by Steidl, Tasche, Plonka-Hoch if you are primarily interested in the signal processing/denoising part, not the PDE part

I am taking this course right now and even though it is difficult, I am falling in love with the subject over the course. This is one of the main areas of electrical engineering research that my university is involved with. I wanted to know if a course in a math department such as classical Fourier analysis would be worth it for electrical engineering. The kind of Engineering i want to do is far from the traditional areas of EE such as circuits and embedded systems or RF, i want to basically be almost an applied mathematician and do work with deep learning algorithms and any kind of signal processing. I am a 3rd year electrical engineering student at UCLA right now. Does anyone have any good course/professor/lab recommendations that would give me good skills and theoretical knowledge for doing work in this field?

I graduated feb this year, and focussed on DSP and ML.
What I did was just take a Control theory, DSP and Deep Learning courses, as well as learn Python in my spare time.
For internships I had luck with audio companies such as hearing aids or headphones. I'm from Scandinavia though, so might be different.

I am working on a digital audio visualizer project with IEEE right now so I am putting my theoretical knowledge to good use with that. I am planning on taking courses in deep learning as well as some in neural signal processing because neural engineering is a big interest of mine as well.

Same here. I basically read my communications systems textbook cover to cover on my own time. Not just to study but also just because it was all so fascinating to me. Ended up building an amplitude modulating circuit for my electronics lab (honestly not that complicated of a circuit, but doing all the math and figuring out exactly how each component worked firsthand was so fulfilling). I found out that another student built a microphone. Obviously, I immediately asked him if we could combine our circuits just for shits n gigs. Didn’t take long until we saw our own voices being perfectly modulated in real time on an oscilloscope. Hoping to find a job in communications soon but my area is mostly in the power industry.
