There are two primary reasons for bullying but you're commonly only told about one.
The first motivation is for someone who is insecure to feel better about themselves by showing dominance over you. This also can increase their social standing in their peer group as they've shown themselves to be stronger than you if you take their bullying. These bullies are easy to deal with because even if they are physically stronger than you, they tend to be cowards so standing up to them causes them to go elsewhere to find a different weak victim who will tolerate their bullying.
The other motivation is one you don't hear about much. It's protecting social integrity. If you have a social group that is functioning well, you don't want some weirdo spaz coming in and disrupting the social order with their behavior. The bully doesn't necessarily gain anything directly from bullying the weirdo but they help ensure the social order is maintained, which benefits them and everyone else in their peer group.
If you're at the bottom of the social order, you will have incentive to have that social order overthrown or at least altered to value your peculiar strengths rather than the strengths of the current dominate group. The fighting in this situation can get very intense sometimes even leading to death.
