Learning a language is easy. Study the grammar rules/verb conjugation and then it’s just vocab vocab vocab. Choose French, it shares a lot of words with English. Take an intro class and buy a bescherelle. Study vocab. Read l’étranger and le petit prince 5x over. Study vocab. Listen to French radios and watch French movies. Did I mention vocab?

My experience of a PhD language exam was an open-reference book translation exercise. You don't need to be fluent. This was before Google Translate, however.

In practice, the only math literature I wanted to read that wasn't in English was in Russian. Unfortunately, I didn't know Russian, and had to guess based on the sequence of formulas.

Can't speak for the other subjects, but Google Translation of a math paper is a categorical equivalence: it acts isomorphically on the vocabulary and grammar, but preserves the logical structure.
Or in simple terms: if a math paper becomes unintelligible when run through Google Translate, then the mathematical reasoning was unsound in the first place.
The soundness of math is, and must be, independent of the language in which it is expressed.

This is very true. While I have no issue personally with randomly gendered nouns in the usual everyday context, it leads to a lot of confusion in very specific fields and also increases the difficulty of learning the language a lot without adding any valuable information to a sentence even when used correctly. Furthermore, it increases language-based discrimination as people who did not yet get used to all the randomly assigned genders are usually frowned at and laughed about behind their backs. So yes, fuck that.
