Anything barely outside the limited knowledge they picked up while they still had childhood brain plasticity is shunned as too complicated. They don't understand anything around them. Government, biology, manufacturing, even the workings of basic appliances in their home. All are a complete mystery to them.
They feel helpless because they ARE helpless.
