U is Union & upside down U is intersection. Union is like analagous to 'or' and intersection to 'and'

This, if you're talking about the TeX names for them. The union symbol is "cup" and the intersection symbol is "cap".

It's a compact way of writing multiple intersections. You've got a bunch of sets, each one is associated with an element i of I, and you're taking the intersection of all of them.

So do people actually say "cup" and "cap" when reading a formula involving unions and intersections out loud ? Asking as an ESL math TA. I usually just say "the union/intersection of A and B" but I wish I could just say "A [something] B"

This is very informal language but it's common to hear people say "A union B", "A intersect B". Pedants will sneer but everyone knows what you mean.
