I like chess but it uses the same "muscles" as the work do in my day to day. I've heard rumors of peoples elo rating going up when they take summers off from math, haha.

Not a mathematician, but I studied math at uni and I do like chess. My rating is not that good, around 1500 (it says 90th percentile on chess.com but I don't think that's accurate). Chess can be incredibly frustrating though...especially if you play a much stronger player.

It's fun on a personal level if you're playing with friends sure. If you are talking about if chess ultimately requires the same critical thinking skills as math does, I am skeptical on that. I've seen that at the highest levels of play, a lot of the preparation is a memorizing game based on a set of possible moves backed up by a chess engine.
