it came from apes and it first affected west-central africa. it has been hypothesized that it came because of eating monkeys both as bushmeat and for survival and that the colonization was a huge factor behind it (less food so people resorted to eating chimps, less hygiene, limb cutting, torture, slaves, i.e. more transmission, etc)

The disease was already going around for decades until some people started dying in noticeable numbers in the early 80s, but this wasn't understood until much later, when the evidence became traces and was increasingly difficult to get, because it wasn't stored or saved properly for that effect.
