Nuclear, however, is a viable competitor
Remember, good propaganda plays both sides. The fossil fuels industry wanted to kneecap nuclear, so what do they do? They get a bunch of environmentalists rattled up about nuclear. The fear perpetuates itself as new nuclear plants are cancelled and old ones show their age and lack of modern safety features.
The fossil fuels industry doesn't give a fuck when those environmentalists come for them. They know that the environmentalists aren't going to propose any viable alternatives since they've already been poisoned against nuclear.
And thus, the oil lobby lives to fight another day.
