Literally EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM is not american. 3/4ths are straight up non-american, and of the quarter that is "american", they're all people who were born outside america, and then moved to the USA after their stay at a university there. Like, seriously. Just go to the fields medalist page, and sort by most recent. LITERALLY NONE OF THEM ARE AMERICAN.

I've heard some americans say that US universities don't allow US citizens to enter, and rather only accept foreigners, because they bring more money. Is this true? A lot of the people on the list have attended top US universities.

The fields medal is great, but being one of the great epicenters of mathematics and being the clear head of mathematical progress is way more important than a medal awarded out every 4 years?
The fields is really cool, but I'm more impressed with people's body of work being discussed for generations to come, not a literal contest that ends at 40

what's recent to you?
there's edward witten in 1990 and curtis mcmullen in 1998. Doesn't seem too bad to me.

again not exactly sure what you mean by infrastructure, but physical infrastructure and money aren't sufficient if you don't have some kind of tradition/history of a subject or have math being valued more by society.
I'm not sure about non-european countries, but france, germany and eastern europe obviously have those.

There's a kernel of truth in that statement. US universities, especially public universities, make more money from out of state students than from in-state students. They also make more money from out of the country students than from US students. This gives them an incentive to favor those who are not from the US. They don't however deny access to the university to Americans, they just have a preference for non-Americans for economic reasons.

The best mathematicians in the US aren't screwing around trying to win a Fields Medal. They're working for Wall Street, insurance companies, or other financial companies making millions. A 10,000 sq ft house on the beach with a five car garage is more important to them than a medal that no one outside of academia has ever heard of except from watching 'Good Will Hunting'.

I mean the most recent one by skimming was 1998 (2014 if you count Manjul Bhargava, says born Canadian but grew up in long island). There are really not a ton of data points regarding fields medalists to make a claim that the US doesn't produce good mathematicians. If you consider that the vast majority of mathematicians never are awarded a fields medal it seems that it would be a strange metric to gauge whether a mathemetician has contributed to the field or not.

If you think there are no native born americans at american universities you are truly retarded. People born in the US make up the majority of the student body.
Universities do seek out foreign students, and charge them more money. There's a huge difference between that and 'no students from the usa'.

This is true for Chinese students (ironic) afail. As mexican however, some universities offer close to free grad studies.

Sometimes I think of America as a talent magnet for milestones development. At least in my perception, American citizens are more "status/fame" oriented. The same applies for some sports as well.

Paul Cohen was born in America and is a Fields Medalist (awarded 1966). So was Charles Fefferman and Ed Witten (1990). There is also Michael Freedman.

That is 5 out of the 13 or 14 American Fields Medallists; there might be more.

From my experience as a frenchman who also studied in the USA for a while, I think I can venture an explanation for France's overrepresentation as Fields Medals recipients.

In the French higher education system, there is a school called ENS Ulm, which is basically a channel where all the maths super-autists are concentrated, and are left free to do maths 24 hours a day. The school is very small (around a hundred students per graduation class), all the teachers themselves are math super geniuses, and the sole purpose is to create new math super geniuses. As you can expect, they go very, very far.

Contrast that with the USA. You have campuses with tens of thousands of students, and classes with hundreds. The focus is to provide a general education to all of these students, rather than push a few of the select best to over-achieve. I don't think that's a bad thing - in fact I prefer the American system, I think it's a lot less oppressive than the French one. But it is to be expected that it won't produce math autists of the caliber France produces.
