Most communists definitely aren't great, and can't really argue their own beliefs, but that applies to most people. I personally think that some of their beliefs can hold water, like Marx's critique of the capitalist finance system (though it's philosophical more than scientific).
The real issue is that communism has become the ideology of "free stuff" and that people are incapable of going deeper than that. It doesn't help, either, that modern communists have to be idealistic, and tend to pursue a sense of moral fulfillment.
The modern job economy is really messed up, but I think both sides are messed up (at least in the US). The left is very focused on identity politics and regulation, both of which are quite detrimental to economic growth, while the right is currently apathetic - our current economic system requires intervention to some extent, and laissez faire policy is at odds with that.

In politics, I would argue that belief is incredibly powerful, and can often matter more than fact. I honestly believe that one of the issues with democracy right now is that people are very willing to play into current moods, and are basically giving up their intellectual autonomy.
