Hydrogen vehicles are much more expensive to operate than gasoline or electric vehicles. The few pumps in CA that sell it charge $14-$15 a kg for it; conveniently 1 kg of of hydrogen has almost exactly the same energy as a gallon of gas. That's at least five times more expensive than American gas. Even with fuel cells, which are about twice as efficient as ICE, driving costs the same as a gas car at $7+ gasoline And auto grade fuel cell stacks are expensive, more than a big stack of batteries at this point.
And hydrogen has shit energy density per unit of volume; a midsized car like the Toyota Mirai can only carry 5 kg of it in its bulky carbon fiber tanks. So a hydrogen burning car would have a rather short range, and even fuel cell ones only have ranges on par with the better battery electrics.
