The myth comes from myxomatosis, but that is a soecial case since most cases comoletely exterminated all rabits, and milder strains survived because they didn't exterminate all of them. Unless the virus is very close to 100% deadly the example isn't relevant, and in fact the virus later evolved to stay pretty nasty despite rabbit's increasingly stronger immunity.
