Is a mechatronic engineering degree a meme? Does anyone look at mechatronic engineers seriously? I'm at the end of my first year and have the final opportunity to finalize either electronic/computer or mechatronic engineering

Toyota hired a couple of Mechatronics here and they were working on cool shit. That's shut down though.
Computer Engineering was never done here.
There are a few jobs in electronics, but you're just as likely to go into pure electrical or control systems if you leave for a smaller city.

Degree world and job world are not the same thing. Nobody is really thinking "oh a mechatronics degree holder, better hire them for this mechatronics position." There's two people on my team that have degrees in mechatronics from a robotics program at a top 10 school, one is essentially working as a pure SW engineer and the other pure mechanical, but I work at an auto company so it's always necessary to understand at least a taste of the other side. You don't need a special degree to do that though of course.

mechatronics engineering is based and cool as shit - doesn't matter what major or angle you start from. You can start from ME, EE, CS, CE, math, or physics, and because of how interdisciplinary it is and how all the major intro to intermediate books are written in a way that everyone in these fields learns a lot without needing a lot of background, it's a very inviting field if incredibly competitive.

Also mechatronics, along with aircraft systems and cryptosystems, is one of the places where software "engineer" means damn engineering.

OP here. Thanks everyone. I ask this because I had a middle aged EE say to me "I haven't heard of mechatronics, but if someone came to me as a mechatronics engineer I'd probably just look at them weird and not hire them".
My plan is to likely stick with mechatronics, find what I enjoy most as I finish my degree and focus my energy into that niche through a engineer/innovation club or something
