Are exams actually useful?

I get that kids should grow up to deal with pressure but the pressure exams produce have no basis in reality.
In fact there are more studies that prove how kids who study FOR exams don’t really end up ready for the real world.
Kids who are genuinely intelligent (Feynman is a good example) have a higher probability of performing well because of the fact they’re just smart and actually know their subject. Why is it that we still bother using such an outdated testing format? What could be some better alternatives to it?
