Got a 20 page assessment basically illustrating my personality, but still got no idea what autism actually is. Especially high functioning autism, it seems like just pathologizing anyone with strong specific interests + some difficulty with social relationships/interactions (who tf doesn't these days) Am I missing something? Kinda sketched out.

Your brain is developed differently than a neurotypical person.
People on the spectrum have more neural connections (different parts of the brain communicating) than them.
We also get more sensory input, which is why social situations (or other sensory overwhelming situations) can be hard to deal with and/or interpret.
The amount of information our brain perceives and then forms neural connections about is what can cause meltdowns.

For me this usually consists of going mute, having to repress intense emotions, or needed a couple minutes to collect myself. Super intense situations can completely fuck up my ability to focus, work, or be sociable though in extreme circumstances.

In the last 6 months, I can count how many “episodes” I’ve had on one hand.

Also, we tend to be able to focus really well, on topics we are interested in.

AQ may be problematic because its inventor conflates autistic traits with so called hyper-masculine traits.

Autism is defined as abnormal social communication and behavior combined with "repetitive or stereotyped" behavioral.
It's social communication disorder + behavioral traits akin to OCD.
Also, autism has been recently reconstructed around the idea of Asperger's.
