Segmented sleep?

What does the research say about segmented sleep and its effects long term? I find that i study best at night so i often sleep for 4 hours then wake up at night to study then sleep another 4 hours and i havent seen any drawbacks from it so far. I'm afraid of messing up my circadian rhythm by doing this every day, but i've also read that segmented sleep might actually be more natural than monophasic sleep.
